Ramon Caballero, from Ottawa, Ontario, is the latest winner of Western Union’s monthly prize draw for a Balikbayan box, a large container filled with non-perishable food, clothing and other daily living products.

“I was surprised and very amazed and happy that I won the promotion,” he says. Ramon has sent the box to his mother, who is elderly and lives alone in Pandacan, Manilla. “She’s the only one left in the Philippines and when my mum receives the box, she will be happy because she will receive food and other important products. She will appreciate it.”

Ramon is the fourth winner of the contest, which runs until December 31, 2010. He entered by texting the correct code using his mobile phone after transferring money to the Philippines from a nearby Money Mart Agent location in Ottawa in April. UMAC, a shipping company that specializes in delivering Balikbayan boxes to the Philippines from around the world, is shipping the box at no charge.

In April, Ramon celebrated five years in Canada and in August, he and his family will take their oaths as Canadian citizens. Ramon has seven children, six of them living in Canada, and a three-year-old grandson. He has worked in the housekeeping department of the Ontario Civic Hospital for the past four years.

Ramon says he likes using Western Union because it is a reliable way for him to send money back home.. He is confident that his money will be available for pick up. He says it’s also very convenient for him to go to one of two Money Mart Agent locations near his home in Ottawa, and for his mother, who lives near a Western Union Agent location in Manilla.
